Stock Donation
A gift of appreciated securities (i.e. stock) entitles you to a charitable deduction equal to the fair market value of the securities. None of the appreciation in the security is taxable to the donor.
Real Estate Donation
A gift of appreciated real estate is like a gift of appreciated stock. Any type of property you have owned for more than one year qualifies as a charitable contribution at its fair market value. The asset may be given outright or may serve as the corpus of a trust arrangement.
In the case of a personal residence, you may be given the right of lifetime tenancy by the donor and/or spouse. An immediate charitable deduction is available to the donor, and the gift is not subject to capital gains taxes.
Gift-In-Kind Donation
The gift of an item (e.g. gymnasium equipment) or a service (e.g. asphalt sealing) can bring great benefit to both the school and the donor. A receipt is issued for all gifts-in-kind; value is determined by the donor and his or her tax advisor.
